Call for Papers (Closed)

The HAAL 2023 conference welcomes proposals in all areas of applied linguistics. While there is no specific conference theme, we are particularly interested in innovative and rigorous topics that demonstrate strong methodological and/or theoretical approaches. Additionally, we encourage postgraduate students who are nearing completion of their theses to submit proposals as well.

Keynote Speech: Applying Corpus Linguistics in (Radical) Workplaces: Language, Identities, and Discursive Practices of Transgender Workers in Outsourced Call Centers

Eric Friginal is Professor and Head of the Department of English and Communication and Director of the Research Centre for Professional Communication in English (RCPCE) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Before moving to Hong Kong, he was Professor of Applied Linguistics at the Department of Applied Linguistics and ESL at Georgia State University. He specializes in applied corpus linguistics, quantitative research, language policy and planning, technology and language teaching, sociolinguistics, cross-cultural communication, and the analysis of spoken professional discourse in the workplace. His recent publications include The Routledge Handbook of Corpus Approaches to Discourse Analysis (2021), co-edited with Jack Hardy; English in Global Aviation: Context, Research, and Pedagogy, with Elizabeth Mathews and Jennifer Roberts (Bloomsbury, 2019); and Corpus Linguistics for English Teachers: New Tools, Online Resources, and Classroom Activities (Routledge, 2018). He is the founding co-editor-in-chief of Applied Corpus Linguistics (ACORP) Journal (with Paul Thompson) published by Elsevier.

Keynote Speech: Disciplinary Epistemology and Academic Discourse

Guangwei Hu is Professor of Language and Literacy Education in the Department of English and Communication and Associate Dean (Postgraduate Studies) in the Faculty of Humanities, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His research interests include academic literacy, biliteracy acquisition, English for academic/specific purposes, language-in-education policy, and the psychology of second language learning and use. He has published extensively on these and other research areas. His most recent co-edited book is Cultural knowledge and values in English language teaching materials: (Multimodal) representations and stakeholders (2022, Springer). He serves on the editorial boards of several international journals, including English for Specific Purposes, Iberica, Journal of English for Research Publication Purposes, Language, Culture and Curriculum, and Publications. Currently, he is Co-Editor of the Journal of English for Academic Purposes.

Route to the venue: There is a footbridge connecting the station and the university campus. After crossing the footbridge, turn right and follow the signs to Core Y, where the conference is held.
